Alistair Overeem Withdraws from Glory Title Fight vs. Rico Verhoeven Due to Injury

Alistair Overeem was forced to retire from the heavyweight title fight with Rico Verhoeven in Glory: Collision 3 due to injury. Glory announced on Wednesday that the heavyweight champion will not go down to the October 23 event.

Rico Verhoeven will remain on the card, according to the offer, and Overeem’s replacement will be revealed in the near future. Overeem posted a statement about his withdrawal via Instagram.

“I am deeply sorry that I have to retire from the match against Rico Verhoeven on October 23. I have never fought and trust me, this decision was difficult to make. “I have been dealing with the injury for more than a month,” Overeem wrote. “Two days before the press conference, a few weeks ago, I could not even walk straight.

“After some treatment I felt much better. And since I was never a retiree, I was not going to quit now. I returned to the camp. But … the injury got worse again and I could not even complete a full workout.

“Yesterday my coaches, my medical team and I had to make the decision to retire. October 23rd I had to do a show to the fans! I wanted to make sure that everyone in the arena and those watching the house got what they came for: a fun high-level match. Even if I was 90% now, or 80% maybe still, I would have gotten into this ring. But I’m at 40% and that is not enough.

“Fighters are coming out there. We train hard, we work hard. A lot is at stake. Our sport can injure you. Not only in the ring, but unfortunately also in preparation.

“I hope I have some understanding from you guys. I will be back soon!”

Glory Collision 3 takes place on October 23 at GelreDome in the Netherlands. The pay-per-view event can be purchased exclusively at
