Amanda Nunes puts bantamweight on line at UFC 265 against Julianna Pena
Two-time UFC champion Amanda Nunes will put the lightweight title on the line against Julianna Pena in August. UFC President Dana White broke the news to ESPN on Thursday.
The title match is expected to take place on the UFC 265 pay-per-view card. The event does not yet have a specific date or location, but the promotion of the match is aimed at the date on August 7th.
Nunes (21-4) holds the 135-pound women’s title and the 145-pound championship. “The Lioness” has not experienced defeat since 2014. The 32-year-old Brazilian leads a streak of 12 wins. He left Ronda Rousey, finished the Cyborg era and lost Holly Holm with a header. Nunes holds victories for the biggest names in the history of female MMA.
Nunes has not defended her bantamweight title since December 2019. Her last two competitions were in the 145 pound division. In August she will return to the weight category that made her famous.
Lightweight champion Jan Blachowicz will face Glover Teixeira at UFC 266
Pena (10-4) reached the UFC by winning The Ultimate Fighter 18 in 2013. An injury limited her career after winning the season. Milana Dudieva returned 18 months later with the Performance of the Night. “Venezuela Vixen” has won six of its last seasons with two defeats being heavyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko and former featherweight champion Germaine de Randamie. Pena won the title by beating Sarah McMann at UFC 257 in January.
