Headline: Joe Rogan says doping is an ‘epidemic’ in MMA
In light of the recent doping issue in MMA, longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan ranted on the subject on his latest podcast, calling the situation a legitimate “epidemic.”
“The UFC and MMA in general is a steroid epidemic,” Rogan said. “They started this really rigorous testing and everyone popped out. They are just thrown right and left. It’s one of the things fighters have been saying for a long time, that everyone is on steroids, a huge percentage. Name the number 50, 60 [percent]. Whatever it is, who’s on steroids.”
Rogan touched on the most high-profile case of recent weeks, the Anderson Silva case.
“Anderson was returning from a broken leg and tested positive for metabolites,” Rogan said. “It was coming out of his system, a very small amount. If so, it could very well be that he took some kind of steroids in order to recover more quickly. Because steroids allow you to recover faster.
“So if he’s 39 years old and he broke his damn leg, you’re talking about a long recovery period. Either you take steroids and recover in nine months instead of 15 months, or fill in the gap. This may be what is happening, but the reality is that it is illegal. You cannot do this. If it takes you 15 months, the excuse can’t be, “I’m going to give you some illegal drugs so you can get better.” This is the only reason you are taking these medicines. Don’t worry about it, you’ll be all right. No, you will never be allowed to take steroids.”
Rogan also shared his thoughts on Hector Lombard’s positive test, news of which broke this week.
“That thing that got Hector Lombard caught, I’ve never even heard of this shit before,” Rogan said. “Obviously it’s a designer anabolic steroid, so I think that means it’s one of those steroids that was designed to get around the rules.
“Tests are getting more and more sophisticated, so who knows? Lombard must have thought he wouldn’t get in trouble for this shit. I do not understand this”.
