Ben Askren continues to shoot Nate Diaz.
After Diaz criticized Askren for his boxing skills, Funky responded that Diaz sucks in fights and would be happy to end his retirement to fight the Stockton native. He was immediately publicized by many fans, and now the former ONE Championship and Bellator champion has posted a clip on social media in which Diaz runs away from Jorge Masvidal’s knee and calls him a coward.
“Real men run towards danger, GOODS run away @ NateDiaz209,” Askren wrote.
Of course, in the fight in front of Masvidal-Diaz, “Geimbred” did the same, landing with his knee in flight, and in just five seconds Askren knocked him out. It was fun to see Masvidal try this trick again, and of course Diaz didn’t want to get involved in it.
Although Askren shoots Diaz, it looks like the fight will take place. Funky is retired and not participating in USADA testing, while Diaz has only one fight left in his contract with the UFC. All things considered, the promotion is likely to be reasonable with whoever they match Diaz to.
Ben Askren (19-2 and alone without competition) has not competed in MMA since he was introduced by Demian Maya in October 2019. Prior to that, he was defeated by knockout from Masvidal. Funky competed in boxing earlier this year in April, where he was knocked out by Jake Paul in the first round. He won notable victories over Robbie Lawler, Shinea Aoki, Douglas Lima, Andrey Koreshkov, Lyman Goode and others.
Nate Diaz (20-13), meanwhile, has been gearing up for a fight since losing a decision to Leon Edwards in June. This was his second consecutive defeat since Nate Diaz won by TKO. He scored notable victories over Conor McGregor, Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone among others.
At this point, Diaz has not responded to Askren’s call.
