Beneil Dariush injured, Bobby Green steps in against Islam Makhachev for UFC Vegas 49 headliner

One of February’s most anticipated fights has undergone a late switch.

Beneil Dariush was forced to withdraw from the February 26 main event of UFC Vegas 49 against Islam Makhachev due to an ankle injury. MMA Fighting confirmed the news on Wednesday after the initial report Ariel Helwani.

As a result of Dariush’s departure, Bobby Green agreed to step in and face Makhachev in less than two weeks as the new main event of UFC Vegas 49, MMA Fighting sources have confirmed. Subsequently, Makhachev announced a new order on social networks.

ESPN first reported the switch. The fight between Green and Makhachev is expected to take place at a catchweight.

Dariusz and Makhachev were scheduled to face off in a #1 contenders match to determine the next contender for the UFC lightweight title, with the winner likely to take on the winner of Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje scheduled for May 7 at UFC 274.

The news came as a heavy blow to Dariusz (21-4-1), who is currently tied for 4th in MMA Fighting’s lightweight division with Makhachev. The 32-year-old has won seven fights in a row and dominated Tony Ferguson in his last fight in May 2021.

Makhachev (21-1) also won nine fights in a row. A protégé of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev last October scored a first-round submission against Dan Hooker to make his way to the title fight.

However, one man’s failure is another man’s opportunity, and now Green (29-12-1) is set to enter the most important fight of his career less than two weeks after defeating Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 271 on a winning streak of two fights, which also includes a first-round knockout of Al Iaquinta in November 2021 at UFC 268.
