The term “Card Of The Year” is dropped a lot, but in the case of the upcoming BJJ Stars event, it may be worth it. A real constellation (thanks to everything) of elite grapplers from top to bottom.
The event is the culmination of the reality show / tournament The New Star (covered here), presenting the grand finale for both the women’s and men’s categories, with matches to Natan Chueng (Cicero Costha) x Lucas Gualberto (Dream Art) and Izadora Cristina (Dream Art) x Ingridd Alves (Guigo).
Although the finale of The New Star should be considered a great opportunity to look at the new generation of jiu-jitsu in Brazil, the event is much bigger than “just” a finale, as it will include a series of exciting battles among some of the most respected and talented grapplers of our time. Matches that we will analyze in the following paragraphs:
– FELIPE PENA (142-19-0) X GEORIO PATRIKOU (99-40-1)
This is one of the biggest fights to be held in the heavyweight division at the moment, with Gaud – – who is running 6 games without a win with his last four Ws coming in on submission – facing Pregiukas, who is also in a steady victory with his last loss of submission to a gi dating back 3 years.
Although Gaudio was the most active of the two, Pena had 3 wins over Gaudio in the black zone, so the advantage here will be on the part of the FP Team leader. No matter who wins, both athletes love to fight and love to play attack, so this fight must be fireworks.
– LUCAS “HULK” BARBOSA (170-39-1) X MATHEUS DINIZ (75-28-1)
One of the biggest rivals in the medium-heavyweight division is that of Barbosa and Diniz, which also translates into one of the biggest struggles of the modern team in the sport (Atos x Alliance). The two have met 6 times in the past, at the black belt level with “The Hulk” gaining a 4-2 advantage (and one submission each winning).
They both love to play the removal game, they both enjoy blitz and pressure, and they both attack the back extremely well. As tight as it comes in a pure skills versus skill competition.
Located on the West Coast of the USA, Barbosa had enough training and competitions to stay active during the Covid19 epidemic, Diniz, who lives in New York, has only trained with his trainer, Marcelo Garcia, in some cases from then. March 2020. Will Matheus be ready to overcome this handicap and steal the victory from Barbosa?
– MAHAMED ALI (89-41-0) X YURI SIMÕES (78-24-1)
Two athletes who like to play the stand-up game more than most on the jiu-jitsu stage expect much of this fight to be played on foot. That said, Simões is more comfortable when he is on the attack, and if he does not take his place, expect him to pull a guard at some point in the fight to get things done.
None of these gentlemen have been very active since the end. Therefore, gas tanks remain somewhat tested in this new Covid era. Whoever has the best gas tank can very well come out with the victory here.
– ΜΙΧΑΗΛ ΛΑΓΓΙ (89-16-0) X CLAUDIO MATTOS “CALOQUINHA” (D / Y)
At one point considered one of the best lightweight of their time, neither Langhi nor Caloquinha were particularly active as Masters, probably two with two of the largest jiu-jitsu academies in the world.
Langhi was the most successful of the two in the IBJJF circuit, but those who know Claudio will remember how tough he was really, physically, technically and mentally. Smooth match between the leaders of the Alliance Matriz (Langhi) and Gracie Barra BH (Mattos).
– WATBERG EXPERIENCE (40-13-0) X ERBERTH SANTOS (246-52-1)
It is interesting to see Erberth still invited to these professional events at this stage. We can not say much that has not already been discussed about Santo, Gutenberg, on the other hand, has looked fantastic since returning to Rio de Janeiro after his time in the US and seems to be stronger than ever. A steady challenge for anyone in the super heavyweight division.
– TAINAN DALPRA (18-1-0) X ΑΘΟΣ ΜΙΡΑΝΤΑ (D / Y)
Although a very recent black belt, Dapra has amassed 14 wins through submission, out of 18 total wins as an ultra-black belt and is already widely regarded as one of the rising stars in the 82 kg category.
Athos Miranda is a member of Marcelo Garcia’s working team and is undoubtedly an experienced and very capable grappler. Nevertheless, he will be the underdog here against the pure style of AOJ athlete, Tainan.
THE FINAL FINAL STARS
– LUCAS GUALBERTO (24-1-0) X NATAN CHUENG (41-16-0)
The final of the men’s section of The New Star is here. Two of the most talented athletes on the Brazilian track will come to the blow in the match Dream Art x Cicero Costha – a classic Sao Paulo.
Gualberto is one of the rising stars of the middleweight division, an athlete whose only loss came through the narrowest margin (1 point). He likes to play from the first place and rarely seems to deviate from this game plan. Strong and accurate, Lucas is a tough combination for Chueng that is naturally light.
Natan is a more flexible grapefruit in the sense that he will change frequently between MOs, depending on the athlete he faces.
Stylistically a uniform fight, Lucas’s size will make him come in as a slight favorite, but not much.
– IZADORA KRISTINA (15-3-0) X INGRIDD ALVES (11-2-0)
Two of the most promising heavyweight women in the world right now, who, unexpectedly, also represent Sao Paulo-Mecca-based teams for jiu-jitsu in Brazil right now.
As it is, Christina is considered the favorite, given the quality of work she has shown during her career as a black belt so far, especially since she got two of the favorites of the New Star tournament, Sabatha Laís and Thamara Ferreira. Still, styles do battle, and given that both athletes love to play the top game, whoever brings this fight to the ground in first place will have the upper hand.
An exciting game ahead for both competitors.
