UFC Featherweight contender Giga Chikaze expects nothing more than a title shot if he scores an impressive victory over Calvin Kattar.
Chikaze has risen to the top of the featherweight division with seven straight wins since signing with the UFC in 2019. Most recently, he pulled off arguably the most impressive win of his career over former lightweight Edson Barboza at UFC Vegas 35.
After each of his last two victories, Chikaze has called out some of the UFC’s top fighters, including former featherweight king Max Holloway. Although he didn’t fight Holloway next time, he’s going to face a big test tomorrow night against another solid opponent in Qattara.
During an interview with MMA Junkie, Chikaze was very clear about his intentions for the upcoming fight and how it could lead him to a featherweight title.
“They talked about it, and I understand, but this fight has already happened twice,” Chikadze said. “So I could get past that and just ask for the title (shot) but I want to fight someone in the top five and the name Calvin Kattar came up. I think that was the only guy who wasn’t busy and ‘Zombie’ (Jang Sung Jung) was injured so I chose Kattar and now we have him for January.”
“I’ve been saying this for a long time, and before people didn’t believe it,” Chikadze continued. “Now, finally, they are starting to believe it. I am the national champion. I can beat anyone at featherweight in the world and I feel like it’s time and it’s time to make it all official.”
Chikaze and Kattar will face off in the main event of UFC Vegas 46 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner of the fight also has the potential to become Volkanovski/Zombie’s backup fighter, who will lose at UFC 273 in April.
Chikaze’s kickboxing has proven to be one of the most dangerous skills in the 145-pound division. If he can maintain his positive momentum, he could be the title holder sooner rather than later.
