Diego Ferreira vs. Gregor Gillespie booked for UFC event on May 8 – MMA Root

A new lightweight bout has been scheduled as Diego Ferreira and Gregor Gillespie have agreed to face off at the upcoming UFC on May 8th.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the match with MMA Fighting will take place on Tuesday. ESPN originally announced the competition.

Gillespie returns to the fight in May after he was originally assigned to fight Brad Riddell back in March. This fight was canceled on the day of the fight after the Australian lightweight was forced out of the field due to COVID-19 protocols.

That left Gillespie without a rival, but he will now return in May as the former NCAA Division-I champion hopes to return to the win column after losing to Kevin Lee in his last appearance in November 2019.

Meanwhile, Ferreira will also try to get back on track after losing by split decision to Beneyl Darius in Fight Night this February. Prior to this setback, Ferreira had six straight wins, including a submission win over former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.

Ferreira vs. Gillespie will join the squad on May 8 with a main event featuring former lightweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who returns for the first time in more than two years as he takes on Corey Sandhagen in a battle that will likely determine the next contender for title at 135 lbs.
