Eddie Alvarez’s unfortunate streak seems to have changed quite quickly.
The former UFC lightweight champion suffered a controversial disqualification loss to Iuri Lapicus at ONE on TNT 1 last Wednesday, after the referee’s punches from Alvarez landed behind his opponent.
As the result broke Alvarez’s heart, it seems that former world champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya circled the name “Underworld Boy” as a potential contender for his return fight in July. This is the case, Alvarez confirmed in a recent interview with ESPN.
“We’ve been hearing from Oscar De La Hoya’s guys recently,” Alvarez said. “Look, I’m stuck on the ONE Championship belt. I’m laser, laser focused on writing history and getting my world title, but I feel there will be a calm. The champion will sit a little bit – I think he will have a baby. If that happens, Oscar De La Hoya and those guys stretch out and Damn, I’d love to go in there and mix with it. It would be a great fight and here in Philadelphia there is everyone supporting me and the whole Philadelphia boxing game [community] to support me. “
At the Jake Paul and Ben Askren press conference in March, De La Hoya joined rapper Snoop Dogg on stage to announce his return to the ring.
“July 3rd, I’m doing my comeback,” De La Hoya said before dropping the microphone.
According to Alvarez, the negotiations between the two teams turned very serious. In fact, they’ve gotten so serious that a deal can be made to book the match in the next few days. MMA Fighting confirmed from sources close to the situation that talks are indeed going on for them to take place.
“It would be a dream come true to go there to mix with that guy,” Alvarez said. Actually, I think I will be very good with him. If they understand that, that would make me very excited.
“There are serious talks. They’re serious, as if they want to make a serious deal this week.”
