Gilbert Burns vs. Stephen Thompson targeted for UFC 264 – MMA Root

Gilbert Burns and Stephen Thompson could soon fight their place in the heavyweight rankings on the line.

MMA Fighting confirmed, with sources aware of the match, that the top two contenders verbally accepted the fight at UFC 264 on 10 July. A location will be determined for the pay-per-view event.

ESPN was the first to announce the match, referring to UFC President Dana White.

This will be Burns’ first fight after seeing a streak of six fight wins broken by TKO defeat to heavyweight champion Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 258 in February. Burns (19-4) scored four impressive victories after rising from 155 pounds to win the championship throw, including wins against previous champion Tyron Woodley and two-time UFC championship contender Demian Maia.

Thompson (16-4-1) fought twice for the UFC heavyweight championship. He fought for a majority draw at UFC 205 with then-champion Woodley, and then lost the majority decision to Woodley in a rematch at UFC 209. “Wonderboy” comes from back-to-back decision victory over Geoff Neal and Vicente Luque.
