Everything is set for Gordon Ryan’s ONE Championship debut.
Ryan, one of the most titled wrestlers in history, will face MMA legend Shaini Aoki in a “super grappling openweight match” on Aug. 27, according to the report. ad from ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong on Monday.
The rules for this competition have yet to be announced, but this will not be the first grappling match Aoki has fought for ONE. He also invited Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Harry Tonon to a promotion in a super grappling match in May 2017, which Tonon won with a heel hook. Tonon is currently a featherweight champion in the ONE MMA division.
Ryan’s plans to compete in MMA are not yet known. He recently told MMA Fighting that while he was preparing for a possible transition, a knee injury in 2019 caused him to refocus on wrestling, which remains his priority.
Among his many wrestling awards, Ryan has won three gold medals at the ADCC World Championships, five gold medals at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, and four Eddie Bravo Invitationals awards.
Aoki gets away with introducing Eduard Folajang in the first round at ONE at TNT 4 in April. The former ONE, DREAM and Shooto champion has won four in a row and eight of his last nine fights in MMA.
