‘He Is in a Good Place Mentally’

On Saturday, Calvin Kattar will return to his Ultimate Fighting Championship in the UFC headline fight on ESPN 32. Kattar (22-5, 6-3 UFC) has been on the sidelines for a year after dropping a unilateral decision on earlier featherweight kingpin Max Holloway at UFC on ABC 1. In that fight, “Blessed” got 50-43, 50-43 and 50-42 nods from the judges after showing supremacy in boxing. A lesser man might not have made it through five rounds on this version of Holloway, but Kattar bit his mouthpiece and survived to hear the judges’ decision. According to Kattar’s trainer and manager, Tyson Chartier, the fight had no impact on the mentality of “The Boston Finisher,” ready to step back into the Octagon and prove his worth against the resounding gig Chikadze.

“I think there was a misunderstanding in the media, maybe this fight shook his confidence or something, but he’s still hungry,” Chartier told Sherdog. “[That fight] showed him like, ‘Okay, I have to feel that level, now I have to figure out how to get there.’ That’s what the last year was all about resting and then figuring out how to get to the next level. Mentally he’s in a good position, we had a great camp, I think 13 weeks, now we’ve been sitting for almost 14 weeks that we’ve already been in camp, so [there was] plenty of time to prepare for Giga. It was good. I have seen [Calvin] improve enormously both physically and mentally in these 14 weeks. It’s almost like the guys are back together. It’s been a year, I missed it, I’m glad he’s going out and competing next [Saturday]. “

After the turmoil that engulfed the £ 145 division in the last few days after Holloway’s withdrawal from the championship trilogy clash with Alexander Volkanovski, Chartier stated that the UFC had not reached out to promote the Chikadze-Kattar affair as title eliminator . He also discussed the camp they had for Chikadze and made his prediction for the fight.
