“Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz Resigns From City Council Position – MMA Root

Tito Ortiz was painted as too bad a boy as a Huntington Beach city councilman, prompting his resignation.

After serving for less than a year, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz is no longer a Huntington Beach, California city councilman following his resignation Tuesday. The never-ending wave of controversy that overshadowed Ortiz’s brief career led the UFC legend to undo his embattled tenure.

Here’s what Ortiz had to say about his resignation in his own words (transcript via Andrew Richardson).

“I would like to inform you that I am resigning my position as pro-temporary mayor of Huntington Beach City Council effective June 1, 2011/21,” said Ortiz. “I ran for this position in hopes of improving my community, working with and giving my constituents a voice, making our beautiful city safe and clean, and ensuring a bright future for my children.

“I had the idea that I was in a bipartisan position and that we all had a common goal… to put it bluntly, that’s not the case. From day one, I was sworn in, met with hostility and judgment … to be the sole focus of character assassinations every week with multiple news stories, leaked personal information … all of which was intended to slander and smear my name . I thought I was up to the job, but I knew I had more than 40,000 voters who were counting on me.

“Recently, the attacks against me have moved to involve my family. Now I feel like your safety is in jeopardy. Simply put, this job is not working for me. ”

Tito Ortiz is a member of the pioneer wing of the UFC Hall of Fame and is a former UFC light heavyweight champion with a total of five successful title defenses. Unfortunately (or very fortunately, depending on who you ask), his career as a politician was not that successful.
