IBJJF 2021 Houston Open Results – MMA Root

Submitting Back Attacks Teaching by John Danaher

APRIL 20, 2021, Houston, Texas was home to another tournament organized by the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Brazil (IBJJF), an event aptly named “Houston Open” As this southern U.S. state is still safe for jiu-jitsu competitions during the COVID19 pandemic, many of the top sports athletes are migrating to these events, adding great interest – in particular – to the adult and black belts section.

FUTURE STARS GRACIE BARRA

One of the main points of interest he had to get from the 2021 Houston Open was the debut of two rising jiu-jitsu stars of the Gracie Barra team, João Felipe Czeski – a student of Felipe Pena – and Bruno Matias, a student of Ulpiano Malachias .

Although inexperienced, Cizeski reached the finals of the middle and heavyweight division and the semifinals of the absolute category with gi. His losses were to both the champions of each division, namely Yago de Souza (MHW) and Johnatha Alves (ABS). A consistent performance for the technical grappler.

Even more impressive was the debut of Bruno Matias. Team member Gracie Barra (Westchase) had a busy day with the gi, reaching the final of the heavyweight division, but it was in the no-gi section of the tournament that the Malachias student really shone. A show of double gold metal with victories for big names in the sport such as Oliver Taza, Rida Haissam and Eduardo Avelar.

DALPRA AND ALWAYS DISABLED IN IBJJF MATCHES

Top Art Of Jiu-Jitsu representatives Tainan Dalpra (14-0-0) and Johnatha Alves (32-6-0) continue the bulldozer through the IBJJF section with another double gold show. In combination, the Dalpra and Alves now have 40 consecutive victories in the major sporting league with a participation rate of 62.5%.

With the exception of his first match (which ended with the injury of his opponent – Guilherme Cleovan – Johnatha Alves submitted all his opponents with the same move. Dalpra also submitted all of his opponents except one (Joseph Watson) to the semifinals of the absolute, although Tainan was extremely dominant throughout the match, placing 72 points in the scoreboard (!).

MELISSA CUETO AIR CONDITIONING OF DANGERS

Another athlete who seemed unstoppable this weekend was Melissa Cueto of Gracie Humaitá Academy in San Diego. Cueto defeated rival Emilly Alves and former world brown belt champion Jess Swanson twice in one day to win the double gold medal. Solid job for the exciting medium and heavyweight competitor.
