A polarizing YouTube-turned-boxer blogger, Jake Paul ditches the idea of fighting Tommy Fury, turning his attention to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Reports that Paul was interested in fighting Chavez Jr. came in days after his rematch with Tyrone Woodley, and Chavez Jr. also discussed a potential fight. Paul was originally supposed to fight Tommy Fury instead of Woodley, but Fury dropped the fight about two weeks before the event.
During a recent interview on Boxing with Chris Mannix In a podcast, Paul confirmed his interest in a possible match with Chavez Jr. for his next challenge in the ring instead of postponing the fight of rage.
“It’s interesting. I really love this fight because it silences the critics,” Paul said.
“He was a former world champion and I know I can beat him. And you look at his track record, about 50 wins or so, and I don’t even know losses, but that’s a good record. So this challenge worries me and I am depressed.
“And what people don’t understand is that even after I knocked out Woodley, they all said, ‘Fight a real boxer.’
“I’m like, ‘Guys, I tried, but he was out of the fight two weeks before.” So I want to fight a real boxer, and I’m going to do it. Just be patient. ” (h / t MMA fighting)
Jake Paul hints at boxing hiatus
Despite the tumultuous rumors about Paul’s next fight, he mentioned that after a busy 2021, he took a break from the ring. Paul earned a brutal knockout over Ben Askren before beating Woodley in a row.
Paul first hinted at a break in the ring after his split decision win over Woodley last August. However, his interest in fighting Chavez Jr. could bring him back into action sooner than expected.
Paul is still active at the gym and on social media, as evidenced by recent footage of him practicing kicks during his tantalizing transition to MMA. Paul’s fans and critics have urged him to meet a real boxer over the past year, and it looks like it could be.
