Joshua Weems Misses Bantamweight Mark – MMA Root

Joshua Weems Misses Bantamweight Mark

There was an accident on the scales during Monday’s weigh-in for Week 6 of the Dana White Candidate Series.

Joshua Weems lifted the scales to 139 kg for his bantamweight collision against Fernando Garcia. As a result, Weems has been fined 20 percent of his wallet. All nine other athletes scheduled for action – including Garcia (13 136) – hit their contracts without a hitch.

The Contender Series airs Tuesday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and airs on ESPN + at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. The typical period of equilibrium is a deep-seated clash between Simon Smoritzky (170.5) and Mike Malot (170.5).

Israeli Smotritsky is just 21 years old, but has a 7-0 record since becoming a professional in 2016. Most recently, “Assassin” made a separate decision against Sergey Yaskovets at the Russian Cagefighting Championship 8 in December 2020. He holds also two wins under the Bellator MMA banner.

Anchored in Team Alpha Male, Malott has won six of eight professional appearances. His most notable fight came in the World Series of Fighting 14, where he suffered a TKO defeat in the first round by UFC talent Hakeem Dawodu in October 2014. Malott returned after a three-year absence to the Cage Fury Fighting Championships 91, where he submitted Solomon Renfro in the first lap last December.

Weighing results of the candidate series:

Shimon Smotritsky (170.5) vs. Mike Malott (170.5)

* Weems lost 3 kilos and was fined 20 percent of his wallet.
