He became the first Atrium Cup tournament champion by beating three opponents at the Moscow event on 11 October. He remained undefeated for the next three years, finishing 11 of his 12 opponents. After the fight, Tavares tested positive for Drostanolone, an anabolic steroid, and received a 9-month suspension. Nurmagomedov defeated Abel Trujillo unanimously at UFC 160 on May 25, 2013. At the weigh-ins, Nurmagomedov went over the allowable limit, weighing 158.5 lbs. He was given two hours to reduce the light weight to a maximum of 156 pounds, but was instead chosen to hand over a percentage of his fight bag to Trujillo. The match was contested at a weight. During the fight, Nurmagomedov successfully took down 21 of 28 tries, setting a new UFC record for most takedowns in a single fight. In his fifth UFC fight, on September 21, 2013 at UFC 165, Nurmagomedov faced Pat Healy. He won the fight by unanimous decision. Nurmagomedov appeared on The MMA Hour, expressing his disappointment, saying, “If they say they’re ready to fight the best, let them fight the best. If they want, I’ll put them both in the cage at the same time.” Nurmagomedov faced Rafael dos Anjos on April 19, 2014 at UFC on Fox 11. He won the fight by unanimous decision. Nurmagomedov was briefly linked to a match with Donald Cerrone at UFC 178 on September 27, 2014. However, the match was quickly shelved when it was revealed that Nurmagomedov suffered a knee injury. He was then expected to face Cerrone at UFC 187 on May 23, 2015. However, Nurmagomedov withdrew from the match on April 30 due to recurrent knee injury and was replaced by John Makdessi. Nurmagomedov was expected to face Tony Ferguson at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale on December 11, 2015. However, Nurmagomedov withdrew from the fight in late October citing another injury and was replaced by Edson Barboza. The match with Nurmagomedov and his father Abdulmanap Ferguson at UFC on Fox 19 has been postponed to April 16, 2016. However, on April 5, Ferguson withdrew from the match due to a lung problem. Ferguson was replaced by promotional newcomer Darrell Horcher at a weight of 160lb. Nurmagomedov won a one-sided TKO fight in the second round. In September, Nurmagomedov signed two contracts against UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez for a title kick in either UFC 205 or UFC 206 fight card, and Dana White confirmed the fight for UFC 205.
