Former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov believes heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou should fight Tyson Fury for big money.
Ngannou has mentioned a move to boxing in the future, possibly when his current deal with the UFC comes to an end. He was at odds with UFC management over the new deal and advocated changing the promotion’s pay structure.
During a recent interview with Sky Sports, Nurmagomedov shared his thoughts on a potential Fury-Ngannou crossover.
“If they fight in the UFC, yes, Fury doesn’t have much of a chance,” Nurmagomedov said. “But in boxing, I don’t see anyone even touching his face – maybe Oleksandr Usyk. The mustache will be a serious test for Fury. And Ngannou? I think he should stay in the UFC. But if he goes into boxing and makes $50 million or $60 million, he should. Why not?
“I know that Ngannou comes from a very, very poor life in Africa. He was without money, without a home, without everything. So if someone pays you more money, go ahead and take it.” (h/t Sun)
Nurmagomedov was reportedly offered $100 million to box Floyd Mayweather at the end of his UFC run, but declined. Nurmagomedov will retire in 2020 after defeating Justin Gaethje.
Most recently, Ngannou defended his UFC Heavyweight Championship against Cyril Gein at UFC 270. He suffered a serious knee injury before the tournament and is expected to miss some time after surgery.
Fury last defeated Deontay Wilder in their trilogy last year and was in talks to fight Dillian Whyte next. However, both Ngannou and Fury have exchanged barbs on social media and are interested in a future clash.
