Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues its series of shows inside the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, February 26, 2022, with an intriguing 160-pound catchweight bout between No. 4-ranked lightweight contender, islam mahachevand growing fan favorite bobby greenwho supplies short-term to replace the injured Beneil Dariush. In the UFC Vegas 49 middleweight co-main event, the renowned finisher Misha Cirkunov looks to secure his first win in the weight class when he takes on Wellington Turman.

Makhachev, who is currently riding a nine-fight win streak in the UFC’s packed lightweight division, was originally expected to face Beneil Dariush in the main event. However, Dariush was forced to pull out just two weeks before the fight and was replaced by Bobby Green, who is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 271 earlier this month. While Green doesn’t have the same division ranking as Dariush, Makhachev needed someone to fight after going through a long training camp.

“Honestly, when Beneil got injured, I told Ali [Abdelaziz, Makhachev’s manager] and he told me the next day that no one gave me an answer, and I thought it was not going to happen. Ali said: ‘Only Bobby Green responds, he said he’s ready.’ I said let’s go,” Makhachev told reporters during the UFC Vegas 49 media day (via MMA Fighting). “It doesn’t matter who because the last three months [were] so hard for me. I prepared for Beneil, training very hard. Just give me someone.

Fortunately, Green is a true warrior and was willing to take the fight no other lightweight wanted to take, especially with only two weeks to prepare and after a 15-minute fight against Haqparast. “King” earned a lot of respect for saving the main event of UFC Vegas 49 and Makhachev will be the first to recognize his heart.

However, Makhachev still plans to expose Green on the ground and ask him a few questions along the way. Kind of like how Khabib Nurmagomedov used to talk to his opponents before choking them or breaking their arm.

“This guy has a big heart because he took this fight [with] one week [notice]Makhachev said. “He has a good boxing style, and on wrestling and grappling, we will review it.

“Let’s talk inside the cage. I’ll knock him down and say, ‘Hey, let’s go. Get up.’ I’m going to talk. He’s going to talk to me when we start, hitting, but when he takes him down, I’m going to ask him a couple of questions.”

Despite his canceled fight against Dariush, Makhachev still believes a win over Green at UFC Vegas 49 will be enough to secure his long-awaited lightweight title shot. Reigning UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is expected to defend his title against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 this May, but after that, Makhachev could find himself fighting for 155-pound gold.

“Of course, because it will be my 10-fight win streak,” Makhachev said. “I really think this is key to the title fight. I think Oliveira is going to beat Justin Gaethje, and an 11-fight win streak versus a 10-fight win streak, this is going to be a great fight for all MMA fans out there.” will offer LIVE, round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC Vegas 49 fight card RIGHT HEREstarting with him ESPN+ Preliminary card bouts at 4 pm ET, followed by the ESPN+ main card start time at 7 pm ET.
