My Daughter’s Harrowing Condition Fueled Me with New Drive for My Career

Seeing his daughter fight for her life gave Roman Faraldo a new meaning for his career.

After only two appearances under the Bellator MMA banner, Faraldo (5: 0, 2: 0 Bellator MMA) made a name for himself as a finisher. On his commercial debut, he defeated Pat Casey on Bellator 252 with a flying knee that paid homage to ATT teammate Jorge Masvidal against Ben Askren. Then the 28-year-old ignored a significant difference in height and range with Trevor Gudde on his way to defeating him in round 1 at Bellator 255 with punches. Faraldo will face Robert Turnquest at Bellator 271, but before that he had to face what he considers to be the toughest challenge of his life. His daughter Maxon was born with an illness that prevented her from breathing on her own for the first few days of her life. While Faraldo didn’t mention it during the interview, there is a GoFundMe campaign aimed at helping him and his wife cover medical expenses.

“A short story, basically my daughter was born with what is known as the meconium aspiration tract,” Faraldo told Sherdog. “They had to [evacuate] her because she couldn’t breathe. They had her undergo an operation called ECMO, which basically acted like one heart and lungs for three weeks, allowing her lungs to heal from the damage. We were in the hospital for 52 days I think. Apart from the damage caused by the lack of oxygen, everything else has completely recovered so far. She is doing great now. I can say that with this situation … children are resilient. Seeing her from birth just fighting for her life puts things in perspective. I definitely want a new drive, a new drive feeling. I’m definitely ready to pull it off in my career and take other steps to move things forward. ”

Faraldo also spoke about his passion for the “Star Wars” films, training with Dustin Poirier on the American Top Team, his encounter with Gudde and his prediction for his upcoming fight.
