Neil Magni and Jeff Neal get another chance to meet in the octagon.
MMA Fighting has confirmed to sources with knowledge of the match that Magni (24-8) and Neil (13-3) are wrapping up negotiations for a welterweight fight at a UFC event on May 8, with a venue yet to be determined.
This is a re-booking on August 29, which Neil was forced to cancel due to health problems. The new date was first announced by ESPN.
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Neil explained that a few weeks before he was due to fight Magni for the first time, he was hospitalized with a non-COVID-19 illness.
Instead, Neil met with Robbie Lawler on August 29. He defeated the former UFC welterweight champion by unanimous decision. In January, Neil saw a three-win streak cut short by a unanimous decision defeat against Michael Chiesa in the main event of UFC Fight Island 8. He has won five of his last seven fights.
Neil is also keen to perform well as Stephen Thompson convincingly beat him in the main event of UFC Vegas 17 in December. It was the first UFC defeat for Neil to lose 5-0 after leaving the Contender Series, with notable victories over Mike Perry, Nico Price and Belal Mohammed.
The May 8 UFC event will feature a bantamweight bout between Corey Sandhagen and T.J. Dillashaw.
