ONE on TNT video: Eddie Alvarez disqualified after landing illegal strikes on Iuri Lapicus – MMA Root

Eddie Alvarez’s long-awaited return to the cage ended in controversy Wednesday night in the first fight on ONE on TNT from Singapore.

After being fired for 20 months, the former UFC champion faced recent ONE lightweight title contender Yuri Lapikus in a fight that could potentially push Alvarez to his own gold medal in the Asian promotion. Instead, Alvarez will go home with a loss of suspension on his track record after Lapicus was unable to continue after strikes that the referee deemed illegal.

The end came pretty quickly in the first round after Alvarez secured the takedown and unloaded the load by hitting Lapicus on the ground. When Lapicus turned his head to avoid the barrage of gunfire, Alvarez kept firing at him while waiting for the finish line.

Unfortunately, Lapicus grabbed the back of his head as he fell to the mat as the referee paused, reprimanding Alvarez for striking incorrectly. Alvarez disagreed that his punches were illegal, but after Lapicus was unable to continue, the referee raised a red card, which meant disqualification from the ONE Championship.

“Yuuri turned his head the other way, and the judge warned me, he told me ‘back of the head, Eddie,’” Alvarez explained after the fight. “So you see how I take my head and I start to shove his head into my punch. You will see this in the feed. When the judge warns me, I take my head and push Yuuri away from the blow that was delivered. On top of that, I felt it was legal to hit the ear at some point. “

“The referee is here, no matter what he does, it’s a bell. I apologize. I hope Yuuri is okay because this game is so dangerous. All I care about is that everyone here is safe and can return home to their family when finished. I’m praying for Yuuri right now. “

After the fight was stopped, there were no more updates on the state of Lapicus.

It’s a tough ending for Alvarez, who wanted to launch the first-ever primetime map of the ONE Championship in the United States in an exciting way, but instead he will head home with a suspension to Lapicus on his track record.
