Pedraza vs. Davis FULL FIGHT: January 14, 2017

On January 14, 2017, Gervonta Davis defeated 130-pound world champion Jose Pedraza, winning her first title by TKO in the seventh round. Gervonta Davis predicted that he would knock out 130-pound champion Jose Pedraza, but did not specify when the stop would occur, suggesting that it could happen in the “eighth, ninth or 10th round.” After all, the 5’6 “Tank didn’t sell for long. After defeating Pedraza (22-1, 12 KOs) for most of the fight, Davis (17-0, 16 KOs) finished off the Puerto Rican champion with a brutal jaw hook at the end of the seventh round, earning the victory by TKO. … Davis, 22, won eight straight wins in a row and took the world title in his first ever chance to become a champion. And while he more than earned that title through dominant performance, he also received a lot of help from his opponent, who used a strange strategy from the start in his third title defense. Despite a significant advantage in height and reach, the 5-foot 8½ Pedraza chose to step out and put pressure on his smaller but stronger opponent using a forward approach rather than boxing from the side. To make matters worse, Pedraza – a naturally Orthodox fighter with the ability to switch strikes – chose to fight almost exclusively in a left-handed stance. This game plan backfired, as Davis immediately took advantage of Pedraza’s aggression, repeatedly punching his defenses with accurate body punches and uppercuts with either hand, as well as left overhand. Drafted beyond his years, Davis categorically punished Pedraza in the first three rounds, which the challenger marked on all three cards. Then in the fourth, when Pedraza raised both hands to his head, Davis went downstairs and hit the body. The undefeated champion did manage to pick up steam by the end of fourth and move it to fifth when he increased his hitting significantly. But whatever momentum Davis lost, he regained it with one punch early in the sixth: a left hook to the liver that made Pedras double up. Knowing that his man was injured, Davis went on the attack, while Pedraza went into survival mode, lowering his right arm to defend against another body shot. Somehow Pedraza managed to get past the sixth, but this was the last round he completed. Having regained solid control of the fight, Davis, at the end of the seventh round, delivered a brutal right hand to the jaw, leaving Pedraza in the background in the corner of the ring. Confused for the first time, Pedraza sat on the canvas until referee Ricky Gonzalez counted to nine and then got to his feet. However, Gonzalez quickly found Pedraza unfit to continue, ending the fight – and Pedraza’s reign of champion – at 2:36. #JosePedraza #GervontaDavis #PedrazaDavis Visit PremierBoxingChampions.com for more information.
