Julianna Peña is already picking opponents for her championship.
It’s only been a month since Julianne Peña became UFC bantamweight champion, but she’s already putting together a list of possible contenders. The first name on her dream list is a well-known name, but no longer in the UFC. Peña has a desire to lure Ronda Rousey out of retirement to settle old scores between them.
Peña began her UFC career with Ultimate Fighter Season 18. Rousey and Miesha Tate coached that season. Peña was a member of Tate’s team and also a friend of hers. Throughout the season, there was a lot of hatred between the coaches and Peña. Friendly with Tate, Peña also took some of that hatred from Rosie.
“She really had a hard time getting along with me in The Ultimate Fighter,” Peña told The NY Post. “She didn’t like me at all because I was friends with Miesha Tate. She wasn’t the cutest.”
Rousey had a very successful run as a bantamweight champion but hung up her gloves back in 2016. After a brief stint with WWE, Rousey is now out of combat sports and raising a family. However, this does not stop Peña from calling her. She would love the chance to beat the former champion if she ever had the urge to come back.
“It would be great to bring Ronda Rousey back from retirement,” she said. “It would be great if she came back to the UFC and fought again.”
Peña is just starting her journey as a 135-pound champion and has already done what Rousey couldn’t by beating Amanda Nunes. Currently, Peña is not supportive of Rosie, but she still holds a grudge.
“I don’t know if she will remember it, because in the end she was taken away by her whole team,” Peña said. ‘But when we won ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ and walked out of the house, she told me, ‘You’ll give me a tougher fight than Miesha Tate, but when that day comes, I’ll still kick your ass… .’ I sort of told her, “We’ll see.”
