Biography of Rafael dos Anjos

Rafael dos Anjos Torres was born on June 21, 1996, in São João de Meriti and grew up in the Baixada Fluminense area of Rio de Janeiro, in Nilópolis, Brazil.

As a child, Raphael was an avid practitioner of capoeira, a martial art / dance / sport he played for 3 years. As dos Anjos got into his tweens and started gaining unwanted weight, this sudden increase in diameter prompted his family doctor to advise the Torres family to include young Rafael in a high-intensity sport. At the time, Rafael had some friends who practiced jiu-jitsu in a local community program, and this close relationship led Rafael dos Anjos to Projeto Sonhos. This social program was led by jiu-jitsu black belt Elan Santiago at Beija Flor Samba School (GRES Beija Flor [Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Beija-Flor]), and was known for his success in the local community.

Rising to the ranks of youngsters and minors under the guidance of Elan Santiago and Rodrigo Akillis, Rafael dos Anjos quickly took his place on the youth stage. His progress also benefited from his access to another legendary Rio de Janeiro trainer – Alexandre Genovesi Paiva (Gigi) – of the Alliance – Leblon Academy. This relationship came from the close relationship between the Beija Flor and Alliance working groups and the friendship shared between the coaches and the two camps that held team meetings once or twice a week.

As soon as Rafael dos Anjos reached adulthood (18) he was forced to leave jiu-jitsu to accommodate the student-employee lifestyle. Full-time in a shoe store and also finishing high school, Raphael did not have the availability to train in a standard academy program. Instead, he would be training with a close friend at an academy in Nova Iguaçú from 11:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. during the week – the only time available for him.

Failing to see Rafael in the aforementioned, Alliance-Beija Flor regularly trained, coach Gigi Paiva asked his trainers about Rafael, and then heard about the conditions of the new talent. Faithful to the talent of dos Anjos, Paiva reached out to the resident of Naples and offered him a full scholarship by boarding. Although Raphael’s parents accepted the idea – preferring their son to follow a more traditional path in life, the young athlete chose to follow his dream, and then join the team as a blue belt.

Under the guidance of Alexandre Paiva, Rafael had the opportunity to represent the Alliance team and medal in some of the sport’s major international tournaments, such as the World, Pan and European Championships.

In 2019, brown belt, Rafael dos Anjos traveled to the United States to compete in the No-Gi World Championship. His time in the US ended up being extended as he joined another Academy related to the Alliance franchise (Cobrinha BJJ) in Los Angeles. Under the guidance of coach Rubens Charles at the Alliance – Los Angeles, Rafael dos Anjos received his black belt on January 25, 2021, with his former coaches Elan, Rodrigo and Paiva appearing through the Zoom call due to the COVID19 pandemic, which prevented them to travel for the event.
