Recover Lost Photos and Videos for the Kodak Zi8

Want to recover lost photos or videos on Kodak Zi8 memory card? If you accidentally delete your images or videos then this article will tell you exactly how to restore deleted photos. The first thing I have to say is that the Kodak Zi8 is a great camera. I am an owner, and I love his power. As you may have noticed, however, the Kodak Zi8 tends to lose photos and videos saved into the memory card. This is a problem that can be solved, read on to find out the quick fix.

Zi8 File System

First let’s take a look at the Kodak Zi8’s memory system. Here are the memory cards he will accept:

  • SD card
  • SDHC card

Both of these cards are acceptable, but the newer SDHC is a bit safer as it protects from better power surges. Because the Zi8 uses a native video resolution of 1920 x 1080 and can still take 5mp pictures you would think that a large card is the best choice for this camera. However, due to the data retention issues, it is often a better idea to use multiple smaller memory cards and change them frequently. This way, if you lose the data on one card, you have not lost everything.

Important: Turn off the damaged card immediately

When you notice that this is happening to your video camera, it means that some sort of transfer error has occurred on your camera and memory card. Often, the pictures or videos that you can’t find yet are still on the memory card, but are accessible, so this next step is very important: You will be able to recover the lost photos, but you have to be disciplined, and no longer use the card. If you continue to write to the memory card, you run the risk of overwriting the missing images or videos.

The reason for this is that when a file stored on an SD or SDHC card is deleted, it is not “deleted” in the way you normally think. In fact, the file is fragmented and hidden from view. With data recovery programs you will be able to recreate the file, but if it is not yet written. So I can’t stress this enough – turn off the card and put it in a safe place. This will help your chances of a full recovery.

Check for physical damage

Then explore your Kodak Zi8 video camera and memory card. There may be some damage to the card or video camera, which is why you will not be able to see the photos you just took. You can clean your card with a microfiber cloth, so that the cloth does not cause the least damage to the card. Check the contents of your Kodak Zi8 memory card on the computer. If you can view the content online, then you are fine. However, if you still can’t see it, consider getting a photo recovery software for yourself.

Scan your SD card

There are a few good photo recovery programs available for free download. The way these programs work is by using a high “file carving” algorithm. This means they can scan your SD card for fragmented photos and videos that are missing the necessary meta data that a PC or Mac would normally need to view the files.

I recommend trying Photo Retrieval 1.70 for PC because the publisher, Odbosso, is constantly updating its definitions to be compatible with the newest and newest camera formats and manufacturers. However, you can also use Wondershare or Disk Doctors. These are available online and can be used for PCs or MACs. Once you have downloaded and installed the software on your computer, you can easily scan the memory card and it will come up with what it found. You will probably be able to see the photos you missed before. Make sure you save the photos in a safe place.

One nice thing about these programs is that you can scan your SD card with the free trial version. If you do not recover your lost photos or videos, you will not be asked to register the software. You only need to pay AFTER you receive your pictures or video back. How great is that?

Still no luck?

As a last resort, you can try an email data recovery center. Do a Google search and you will find many reputable companies. However, trying a software approach is certainly the quickest, easiest and cheapest. Good luck!
