#ufc #robbielawler #rorymacdonald #mma Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight contenders Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald (November 16, 2013) faced off in a crucial match at UFC 167 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. #3 MacDonald sought to prove he’s the rightful heir to the next UFC 170-pound title hit against Lawler, who back-to-back knocked out Josh Koscheck and Bobby Voelker earlier this year and went up. MacDonald has won the last five mixed martial arts (MMA) wins in a row. But he’s also faced a ton of criticism for his latest performance, an obvious but rather uninspired unanimous decision about Jake Ellenberger at the UFC on Fox 8 in July. This escalated into a battle as Lawler grieved over one of the biggest wins of his long and storied career. Let’s take a look at a defining moment for Lawler in the UFC’s twentieth anniversary show. The fight initially began tentatively when MacDonald wanted to use his superior reach to keep Lawler’s striking power at bay. MacDonald checked out the Octagon, but didn’t reveal a ton of volume. Lawler gave “Ares” a few nice low kicks in the forefoot. While Lawler tried to find a gap, MacDonald constantly fired forwards to create distance. He finally landed a kick and then a few punches. The second round saw MacDonald go for an early one-leg. Lawler responded with a few rounds, and then went to the corpse. MacDonald opened his stunning game with hard body punches. It was a back and forth fight on foot until MacDonald controlled Lawler and made the first major destruction of the fight. “Ares” lowered a few sharp elbows to close the second frame. Lawler came out throwing heavy leather in the final round and tagged MacDonald clean. Lawler took a knee but was knocked down. The fight took off and Lawler launched another big hook. MacDonald went for a brief takedown before Lawler returned to shooting the rains. “Brutal” knocked MacDonald down with a great combination and rallied to seek the finish. The veteran fighter continued to score from side control over a stunned MacDonald. To stay undefeated, MacDonald went to a crossbar and then took a big takedown to lower more elbows as the fight drew to a close. It was a battle that caused Lawler to take home a tense split decision. .
