UFC 261 Chris Weidman kicks in throw against Uriah Hall – Likewise

Perhaps the most terribly ironic result in MMA history, Chris Weidman broke his leg while striking Uriah Hall – just like he beat Anderson Silva almost eight years ago. The first kick Weidman (15-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC) took with his right foot, Hall (17-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) lifted his left foot to test it. When he did so, Weidman’s lower right leg folded as if it were made of rubber. Then Weidman stepped on his foot and fell. The fight was immediately stopped in just 17 seconds. In December 2013, in his first UFC middleweight title defense against Silva, whom he defeated for the belt earlier that year, Weidman tested Silva’s kick and broke Silva’s leg. The only real difference between the Silva kick that Weidman tested and the Weidman kick that Hall tested more than seven years later was left versus right. The injury has kept Silva out of the game for over a year and is known as one of the worst injuries in sports history. A compression boot was placed on Weidman’s left leg and pulled out of the cage on a stretcher. During the reruns shown in the arena, the 15,000 fans in attendance seemed to moan unanimously. The event marks the first UFC in front of fans since the COVID-19 pandemic began. “I have nothing but respect for Chris Weidman,” Hall told Joe Rogan after the fight. “He’s really one of the best. It’s a crazy story that he was the first person I fought, who defeated me, who made me fear. … I wanted to show a great performance. I am so sorry for him. Hope he’s okay. I wish the family well. This is the crap part of this sport. … I hope he gets well. ” UFC 261 took place Saturday at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The event marks the first UFC event in front of fans since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The main map aired on pay-per-view following previews on ESPN and early previews on ESPN +.
