He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy from different martial disciplines that often paves the way for modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Lee is seen by commentators, critics, the media, and other martial artists as the most influential martial artist of all time and a 20th century icon of popular culture bridging the gap between East and West. He has been praised for helping change the way Asians are featured in American movies. Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen’s son Lee was born on November 27, 1940 to a Hong Kong family in the Chinatown district of San Francisco, California, and grew up with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He was introduced to the film industry by his father and acted as a child actor in many movies. Lee moved to the United States at the age of 18 to pursue his higher education at Washington University in Seattle, during which time he began teaching martial arts. His Hong Kong and Hollywood films raised the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, and sparked interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in the 1970s. The direction and tone of his movies changed dramatically, affecting martial arts and martial arts movies in Hollywood, Hong Kong and the rest of the world. He is known for his roles in five feature-length martial arts films in the early 1970s: Lo Wei’s The Big Boss (1971) and Fist of Fury (1972); Golden Harvest’s Way of the Dragon (1972), directed and written by Lee; Golden Harvest and Warner Brothers’ Enter the Dragon (1973) and The Game of Death (1978), both directed by Robert Clouse. Lee became an iconic figure recognized worldwide, especially among the Chinese, for portraying Chinese nationalism in his films and challenging the stereotypes associated with castrated Asian men among Asian Americans. He trained in the art of Wing Chun and later combined other influences from various sources with the spirit of his personal martial arts philosophy called Jeet Kune Do (Prevention Punch). Lee had homes in Hong Kong and Seattle. He died on July 20, 1973 at the age of 32.
