He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy from different martial disciplines known for paving the way for modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Lee is considered by commentators, critics, media and other martial artists as the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century who bridged the gap between East and West. He is best known for helping change the way Asians are presented in American movies. The son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen, Lee was born on November 27, 1940 in the Chinatown district of San Francisco, California to Hong Kong parents and grew up with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He was introduced to the cinema industry by his father and acted in many films as a child actor. Lee moved to the United States at age 18 to pursue his higher education at the University of Washington in Seattle, during which time he began teaching martial arts. His Hong Kong and Hollywood productions raised traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim and sparked interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in the 1970s. The direction and tone of his films significantly changed and influenced martial arts and martial arts films in Hollywood, Hong Kong and the rest of the world. He is best known for roles in five feature-length martial arts films of the early 1970s: Lo Wei’s The Big Boss (1971) and Fist of Fury (1972); Golden Harvest’s Way of the Dragon (1972), directed and written by Lee; Golden Harvest directed by Robert Clouse and Warner Brothers’ Enter the Dragon (1973) and The Game of Death (1978). Lee has become an iconic figure, recognized worldwide, particularly among Chinese, for his portrayal of Chinese nationalism in his films and for challenging stereotypes of the castrated Asian male among Asian Americans. He was trained in the art of Wing Chun and later combined other influences from various sources in the spirit of his personal martial arts philosophy, which he called Jeet Kune Do (The Way of the Cutter Fist). Lee had residences in Hong Kong and Seattle. He died on July 20, 1973 at the age of 32.
