The UFC has set their sights on a high-level bantamweight fight at the main event on May 21st.
According to a message from Ariel Helwani. The fight is set to headline the Fight Night card in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The fight gives Vieira the chance to take another big step up in the bantamweight division. Although she is currently ranked 5th in the official UFC rankings, she is paired with Holm, who is currently ranked 2nd.
Vieira scored a big win in November, going five rounds and defeating former UFC bantamweight champion Misha Tate via unanimous decision. The bout stopped the rise of Tate’s returning challenger, who was making his second appearance since his retirement.
The fight returned Vieira to the winning column after losing earlier in the year to Yana Kunitskaya. It was also her debut in the main event of the UFC card.
Six months after Vieira’s last victory over the former champion, she will have the opportunity to beat another.
Holly Holm returns from absence
Holly Holm’s next appearance will mark her return to the cage as she hasn’t competed since October 2020. She was assigned two matches in 2021, though both fell through due to injuries.
Holm is returning with some momentum as she previously picked up two wins in 2020. She started the year with a win over Raquel Pennington. She later returned to play five rounds against Irene Aldana for a unanimous decision win.
As previously mentioned, this is only the second time Vieira has appeared as a headliner. The same cannot be said for Holm, who has appeared in eight previous UFC main events.
