Whatever the curves of the scorecards, Robert Whittaker vs. Calvin Gastelum caused a constant stir over five rounds, forcing UFC Vegas 24 headliners to compete for performance bonuses.
The middleweight headliner on Saturday at UFC APEX was honored with the Fight of the Night award after ex-champion Whittaker knocked out a scorecard, earning a unanimous 50-45 tie over former interim title challenger Calvin Gastelum. Both members took home additional $ 50,000 bonus checks.
Subsequently, Whittaker called for a rematch with Israel Adesanya, the man who defeated him nearly three years ago to win the middleweight title.
There was no competition for other bonuses, as only two out of 10 fights ended without a finish, and one was a rare technical decision after Juan Espino’s foul ended in a heavyweight fight with Alexander Romanov. But two of them earned checks for $ 50,000 for Show of the Night.
First, Gerald Meerschart recovered from a one-hit knockout defeat to Khamzat Chimaev by submission to Bartosz Fabinski, his sixth such victory in the Octagon and 24th in his professional career.
And secondly, Tony Gravely received a bonus for stopping Anthony Birchak in the second round in the card opener on ESPN +.
