UFC Vegas 41: Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori verbally agree to 195-pound catchweight fight
During a pre-fight media scrum, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title contender Paulo Costa revealed that there was no way he could reach the 186-pound limit agreed to for his fight against Marvin Vettori due to to the fact that he weighed about 211 pounds two days after the day of the weigh-in.
The writing was on the wall, apparently.
Undeterred, “Borrachina” proposed that the fight take place at an agreed intermediate weight to preserve the main event of UFC Vegas 41, which will take place within UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. And UFC officials were willing to please because ESPN’s Brett Okamato revealed that the promotion will continue with the fight at middleweight.
While exact numbers have not yet been revealed, Costa and Vettorri conducted a joint interview with ESPN and verbally agree to fight each other at a 195-pound weight.
This is the first time Costa has failed to gain weight, but it is still a bad look for the former title challenger. Win, lose or draw, the huge Brazilian has faced criticism going forward, so it will take a spectacular performance to at least try to win over some people.
