One of the most iconic and grotesque scenes in sports history took place on June 28, 1997: Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield on the ear.
Monday marks the 24th anniversary of The Sound and The Fury: Evander Holyfield vs. Mike Tyson II. The event was later referred to as “the bite fight” or “the 97 bite” after Tyson was disqualified for biting off part of Holyfield’s ear. “Iron” Mike subsequently lost his boxing license, although it was later reinstated.
The fight was a rematch of their original clash on November 9, 1996, a boxing match that Holyfield won by TKO in round 11 despite being a sizable underdog to win the WBA heavyweight title.
In the wake of the bite, Tyson had a 5-3 season without a contest before retiring from a loss to Kevin McBride on June 11, 2005. “Iron” Mike returned to the show last November, fighting a split draw. . in a boxing exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr.
Holyfield fought 20 more times after the Tyson fight, retiring following a TKO victory over Brian Nielsen on May 7, 2011.
